I thought I’d mix things up a bit this week and share a classic style large format image of spring Corn Lily leaves. While many of you are already easing into Spring, Winter here in the mountains of Lake Tahoe can last, well, quite a while. When the snow does melt and Spring actually arrives at altitude, the soothing green tones of the Corn lily leaves is a welcome sight. This image, “Corn Lily One”, was captured in one of my favorite meadows here in South lake Tahoe using my Canham 4x5 metal field camera and 4x5 inch Fuji Provia 100F transparency film.
These large plants have beautiful lines, curves and contrast, which makes for an interesting and somewhat sensual intimate detail image. While they are most often captured on black and white film, I wanted to hold on to that beautiful spring green that is so refreshing after months of snow covered landscape. While I most often compose more grand landscapes, using plants like these as foreground elements, eliminating the context of the scene and focussing simply on the shapes and textures of this Corn Lily makes for an impressionistic piece of art celebrating nature.
As a large format landscape photographer, I shoot very little. I wander beautiful outdoor places taking in the experience until one spectacular detail moves me to compose an image. I thoroughly enjoy the art of observation and only take my camera out when I believe a scene is worthy of a sheet of film. Eventually, I get to see others react to my vision on gallery walls. Many will see “Corn Lily One” as a natural abstract or an impressionistic statement. Others, who have been to the mountains in Spring, will visualize the entire scene in which I (we) stood when creating this image. However you see this image, I hope it brings you the feelings of spring.
Please leave a comment and share your impressions of this classic image.
Yes, I want to learn to experience photography this way!
Collectors Tip: This new image will look amazing printed on either aluminum or as a photograph on paper. However the image moves you, or fits your design style, this intimate natural detail image can compliment your space.
Note: My partners at Marcus Ashley Gallery are framing experts as well. You can work with them from start to finish and end up with the perfect piece of art for your space.

Photographers Tip:
When creating images of popular subject matter, be open to how the scene feels to you. Use what you have seen in the past by others as a starting point. If that feels good, go with it. If you are compelled to capture the subject differently, go with that. Don’t, however, force your composition either way. This is your art. Do what feels right to you.
