Sunset evolution, sand harbor,
lake tahoe
For some time now, when the opportunity presents itself, I take advantage of one of the benefits of film, the ability to take extremely long exposures without loss of quality. As I experience locations I have visited many times before, and perhaps captured beautiful images, I am looking for a way to compose images that capture the essence of a place. For this image, “Sunset Evolution, Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe”, I used a dark neutral density filter to lower the light entering my camera, which enabled me to do a 6 minute long exposure. I was able to produce an image of the entire duration of the sunset. Along with capturing the saturation of colors throughout the exposure, all motion in the water and clouds blended together, creating a soft ethereal mood for the scene. While only one sheet of 4x5 inch film can be exposed while the sunset is happening, which is quite risky, the results most often prove to be worth it.
This is, “The Fine Art of Nature”
