Zephyr Evening, Lake Tahoe
It seams as though I am moved to doing my art when the weather is tumultuous. As a late summer storm blew in to Lake Tahoe, I headed out to Zephyr Cove. Not only was I hoping for a dramatic sunset, but I envisioned using a long exposure with the clouds blowing directly toward me and over the small island that sits just off shore. My instincts were accurate, and Mother Nature didn't disappoint.
As the sun sank toward the horizon, it backlit the lower clouds that were behind the trees, adding contrast and creating a window of light within the dark storm clouds. Using 100 speed 4x5 inch black and white film and a yellow contrast filter, I was able to produce a long enough exposure accentuate the feeling of movement and power in both the clouds and water. The streaking clouds also create leading lines pointing to the island in the center of the frame. I love the ability I have to communicate the mood and emotion I feel while out in the field. My choice of big black and white film and fully manual equipment enable me to bring my visions of the natural world to fruition.
Enjoy "The Fine Art of Nature"!
