Monterey Dusk Black & White, California

The California Coast near Monterey and Carmel is steeped in history regarding famous black and white photographers. On this visit it made perfect sense to me as to why many of the icons of landscape photography frequented this area, or chose to live here. The coastline is stark and dramatic with endless possibilities. it is ever changing, moody and powerful. As I set up my 8x10 film camera, it was obvious that I wanted to shoot black and white. I waited for the sun to set, minimizing the amount of available light and enabling me to do a very long exposure of 15 minutes. This long exposure minimized the crashing waves and whitewater to a mist, contrasting strongly against the jagged rocks jutting from the water. This is how dusk feels on the coast.
