Milkyway over emerald bay, lake tahoe

“Milkyway over Emerald Bay” is an other worldly, dare I say heavenly view over Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe. Quite a departure from my contemplative large format film photography, this type of image is an exercise in fun. Professional digital cameras now enable us to use extremely light sensitive settings in order to capture the light of the universe much more readily than our eyes can. I occasionally take the opportunity to explore the natural world when it is its most quiet, in the middle of the night. There is something freeing about wandering out onto a small granite outcrop above an iconic location by the light of a headlamp in the darkness of a new moon night. After setting up my camera, I turn the light off and let my eyes adjust to the darkness. In absolute silence, I can see the entire arc of the Milkyway stretching across the night sky. That feeling of wonder I share with you here.
