Fall Color & Sunset, Emerald Bay

The Fall of 2018 was interesting. While the colors on many of my favorite locations were vibrant from a distance. They didn’t stand up to the fine detail I require for my limited edition large format film images. As I searched the Lake Tahoe region for inspiration, I was taken by the unusual volume and vibrance of the aspens within Emerald Bay. I was fortunate to have found this composition combined with beautiful sunset colors. I chose to do a long exposure using print film (a negative) in order to hold the exposure range from highlight to shadow. Without the immediate feedback of a transparency, the film was set aside while I was busy.

I finally took the time to scan the 4x5 inch negative on my new (to me) drum scanner during our slow season in May. Needless to say, it was a pleasant surprise. Amazing conditions, a beautiful exposure, and a huge sheet of film allowing immense print sizes with clarity and detail. This image will enable you to stand where I stood and feel the experience of that amazing fall evening.
