Corn Lily One

When the snow melts and Spring actually arrives at altitude, the soothing green tones of the Corn Lily leaves is a welcome sight. This image, “Corn Lily One”, was captured in one of my favorite meadows here in South lake Tahoe using my Canham 4x5 metal field camera and 4x5 inch Fuji Provia 100F transparency film.

These large plants have beautiful lines, curves and contrast, which makes for an interesting and somewhat sensual intimate detail image. While they are most often captured on black and white film, I wanted to hold on to that beautiful spring green that is so refreshing after months of snow covered landscape. While I most often compose more grand landscapes, using plants like these as foreground elements, eliminating the context of the scene and focussing simply on the shapes and textures of this Corn Lily makes for an impressionistic piece of art celebrating nature.
