Antelope Canyon II, Page, Arizona
The desert Southwest is an amazingly beautiful place. As a photographer living in the High Sierra mountains of California, I am attracted to how different red rock country is. The flowing forms of red rock mixed with beautiful light are almost overwhelming. It brings out a different side of me, as a person and as an artist.
This image was taken in Antelope Canyon. This "slot canyon" was formed by running water slowly eroding the layers of sandstone. The canyon is 100 feet deep in places, with the opening above ranging in width from mere inches to many feet across. As the sun rises in the sky rays of light are able to enter the canyon through these openings. Light beams can form, and the light reflecting off of the walls of the canyon glows and changes color. The interplay of reflected light, shadow and sensual rock formation is a feast for the artistic eye. Impressionistic art abounds in reality here.
